Silk Appliqué or Ribbonwork is an extremely important art form.
The earliest
Ribbonwork was done with silk ribbon. More recently, silk ribbons have given way to bolt silk, nylon, and rayon; designs are cut from one color of
fabric, sewed onto a panel of another color, and then sewed as a decorative border
or pattern to a broadcloth
or other cloth garment. Although geometric designs are used to a considerable extent, the majority of
the beautifully elaborate patterns are curvilinear or floral.
